ELAYARAJA OF TRAVANCORE 1922 - 2013

Sree Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma

He is the younger brother of the last monarch (1931 - 1947) of the kingdom of Travancore, Maharajah Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma(1912 - 1991).As the titular Elayaraja,Sree Uthradam Thirunal(1931 - 1947) had no real administrative power but was a popular figure in Travancore,and had daily ceremonial engagements. He also maintained his ritual position at the Padmanabhaswamy Temple as the custodian of the temple(1991 - 2013), and was involved in all day-to-day events.

Sree Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma resided in Pattom Palace, Trivandrum after the demise of his elder brother late Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma and headed Travancore Royal House. It has been decided to set up a Center for Research, an Art gallery and a Hall to maintain the rare photographs taken by Padmanabhadasa Marthanda Varma, exhibit mementos, gifts, presents etc. received by him and to establish a research library. form the basic aims of SUTIC.

Inauguration by Dr.Sashi Tharoor,Hon.Minister of State for HRD.Govt.Of India and 200th Birth anniversary of Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma was observed.Keynote address by Dr.Prof. Robbin Jeffrey of Australian National University. Historian Dr.Prof.M.G.S. Narayanan,Ex Chairman of ICHR and Director General of Centre for Heritage Studies Govt. of Kerala delivered the special lecture.
